Going Retro
In my campaign I enjoyed activating a Medical team from 1969. Armed with M1A1 Thompsons and wearing steel pots I had flash backs to the 1960's TV show "Combat". Well of course It didn't stop there.
Since a majority of my weapons for the early portion of my campaign come from misappropriation. It was inevitable given the start time of the project that some early teams be armed with retired (yet almost new) Korean era weapons. The Thompson and M1911A1 were easy. Firing the .45 acp round it was a no brainer.
However when I tried to integrate the BAR, M1 carbine and a .30 caliber machine gun into the game "boom!" it blew up in my face. Luckily I forsaw this and was prepared.
.30 Calliber rounds
.30 caliber rounds come in several flavors here is the fix for the problem in question.
7.62mm Nato (7.62 x 51mm) M60 GPMG, M240 (MAG), M14, M21 etc. 30-06 caliber (7.62 x 63mm) BAR and M1919A4 .30 caliber (sometimes called carbine) (7.62 x 33mm) M1, M1A1, M2 and M3 carbines The US Army had adopted the M60 GPMG and had a ready stock of 7.62 Nato ammo left over from the M14 days.
The BAR and M1919A4's were produced in multiple calibers any ways. The Morrow Project Armorers easily converted the hundred or so weapons over to the new caliber, once M14's became more readily available this process of converting BAR's ended. Very few M1919A4's were converted as M60's were becoming easier to acquire. By the early part of the 70's the weapon conversions had stopped.
The carbines were another story, not so easily converted. The project had thousands of them so an original M1 series carbine was issued per cache early on. The armorers forseeing it's popularity as an economical reloader.
So the Project issues one type of .30 caliber weapon. The remainder in standard 7.62 Nato.In my campaign the 30-06 caliber round was never issued. Thus I don't use M1 Garands.
